Former NHLer and Spittin’ Chiclets co-host Paul Bissonnette has sparked fresh conversation about Mitch Marner, projecting that he may be in line for a career-defining season. During the latest podcast episode, Bissonnette offered an apology to Marner, followed by bold predictions for the 2024-25 season.
“This is my apology to Mitch Marner,” Bissonnette said. “I think he’s going to have a monster year. I think he’s going to win the Selke Trophy, and after hearing about his training with McDavid and MacKinnon, going to all these camps and training at high altitudes, I actually think there’s a possibility that Mitch Marner could lead the league in scoring next season.”
He went further to suggest Marner could win the Art Ross Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s leading point scorer. Now that would really mean something for a player who has traditionally been recognized more for his playmaking and two-way game.
Bissonnette’s confidence in Marner stems from the winger’s intensive offseason training regimen. Marner spent time training with elite players such as Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. Additionally, Marner’s focus on high-altitude training—known for its impact on endurance and conditioning—could provide him with the stamina required to excel over the grind of an 82-game season. There also hangs the question regarding his future in Toronto, but that’s for another day.
From a tactical perspective, Marner’s versatility is a critical asset. He excels both as a playmaker on the top line and as a penalty-killer, seamlessly transitioning between offensive and defensive roles. His work in the defensive zone is often overlooked, but with Bissonnette’s mention of a potential Selke Trophy, it’s clear that Marner’s complete game is gaining recognition.

Winning a Selke would position Marner as one of the most well-rounded forwards in the NHL, with a strong two-way presence that few wingers in the league can match.
One of the key areas where Marner could increase his scoring output is on the power play. As a quarterback on the half-wall, Marner controls the pace and flow of play, using his elite hockey sense to exploit defensive breakdowns. His ability to make quick, accurate passes in tight spaces allows him to create high-danger scoring chances, both for himself and his linemates. Should the Leafs’ power play continue to improve, Marner’s point totals could rise significantly, putting him in contention for the Art Ross Trophy.
Further enhancing his scoring potential is Marner’s chemistry with Auston Matthews. The duo has developed a strong on-ice connection over the years, with Marner’s passing feeding Matthews’ elite shooting ability. If this chemistry continues to flourish, Marner could see his assist totals surge while also benefiting from increased goal-scoring opportunities.
Leafs year baby. #leafsforever

There’s rising optimism surrounding the team heading into the 2024-25 season. Whether Marner can meet the high expectations set by Bissonnette remains to be seen, but if his offseason preparation and continued development are any indication, he may be on the verge of a standout season, with both the Selke and Art Ross Trophies within reach.
Is this the Leafs’ year? According to Bissonnette, it just might be.
