The Toronto Maple Leafs’ preseason camp is bringing some interesting developments ahead of the next game. To begin with, forward Bobby McMann took a break today.
He was given a “maintenance day,” citing he needs some rest to recover but isn’t seriously injured. Coach Craig Berube reassured fans that McMann’s absence isn’t anything to worry about.
Meanwhile, the team is hopeful that Jani Hakanpää will rejoin the main group next week. His return is eagerly anticipated as the Leafs continue preparing their defensive lineup. The unit is looking forward to seeing how he fits into the team’s system once he’s back on the ice.
The following players will not skate today and are listed as day-to-day:

F John Tavares (lower body)
F Alex Steeves (lower body)
F Calle Järnkrok (lower body)
On a less positive note, John Tavares was missing from practice again due to a lower-body injury. While the team hasn’t provided much detail, an update on the possible return of the ex-captain is expected by this week, per Leandro McConnell.
Easton Cowan dubbed highlight of the Leafs preseason
Easton Cowan, one of the younger players, is getting a lot of time on the ice. The youngster has been dubbed the ‘Ace in the shining’ by Julian Artemi on the FromTheBend Hourglass Podcast.
Tonight, Cowan will play in his fourth preseason game, making him the only Leafs player to suit up for all four matches so far. His energy and performance are something the coaching staff is definitely keeping an eye on.
Goaltender Dennis Hildeby is expected to play the full 60 minutes in tonight’s game, giving him a solid chance to display his skills. It’s a big opportunity for Hildeby, and a strong performance could boost his position on the team.
Finally, all eyes are on defensive prospect Topi Niemelä, who will make his preseason debut tonight against Montreal. Niemelä had an impressive showing during the prospect tournament a few weeks ago, where he picked up five assists in just two games. Now, he’s hoping to build on that momentum and make a strong case for himself.
In other news, there’s still a lot of chatter about Nick Robertson potentially being traded. Multiple teams are interested in him, and if he can’t secure a top-six role on the Leafs, a trade seems more likely.
